ભારતના કર્ણાટકમાં સેન્ટ મેરી આઈલેન્ડ નામનો ટાપુ સમૂહ જાણીતો છે. તેમાં ચાર ટાપુ પૈકી કોકોનટ આઈલેન્ડ પર કુરદતે સર્જેલી અજાયબી જેવા કાળા પથ્થરના સંખ્યાબંધ સ્તંભ જોવા મળે છે. ૫૦૦ મીટર લાંબા અને ૧૦૦ મીટર પહોળા ષટકોણ આકારના ટાપુ પર લાખો વર્ષ  પહેલાં જ્વાળામુખીની પ્રક્રિયાથી સર્જાયેલા આ સ્થંભો લાવારસના બનેલાં છે. આ સ્થળ જીઓ ટુરિઝમ કહેવાય છે. ઈ.સ. ૧૪૯૮માં પોર્ટુગલ પ્રવાસી વાસ્કોડી ગામા ભારતમાં પ્રવેશતાં પહેલાં આ ટાપુ પર ઉતરેલો અને તેણે ટાપુને સેન્ટ મેરીનો ટાપુ નામ આપ્યું ત્યારથી આ ટાપુઓ એ નામે જ ઓળખાય છે. ટાપુ પર નિયમિત આકારના પાંચ, છ કે સાત બાજુ ધરાવતા ઊભા સ્તંભોની રચના અજાયબી જેવી લાગે. સૌથી મોટો સ્તંભ ૨૦ ફૂટ ઊંચો છે. આ અગ્નિકૃત ખડકના બનેલા છે. આ ટાપુ અંગે અનેક વૈજ્ઞાાનિક સંશોધનો થયા છે. ભૂસ્તર શાસ્ત્રીઓ માટે મહત્વપૂર્ણ સંશોધન સ્થાન છે. આ ટાપુ પર કર્ણાટકના માલ્પી બંદરેથી જવાય છે. ત્યાં પણ વદાભંદેશ્વર મંદિર નામનું પૌરાણિક મંદિર જોવા લાયક છે.
